SNMP is short name of Simple Network Management Protocol. SNMP is an Internet-standard protocol for managing devices on IP networks. It is used for collecting information from, and configuring, network devices, such as servers, printers, hubs, switches, and routers on an IP network. SNMP is the protocol that allows an SNMP manager to control an SNMP agent by exchanging SNMP messages. An SNMP message is a packet sent over UDP/IP to port 161. To work with SNMP, network devices utilize a distributed data store called Management Information Base (MIB).
